Project Description

THE DANUBE DELTA

Dobrogea, Romania.

Profile: rest, trips, fishing

The Danube Delta, a true paradise that must be explored

The Delta has been formed over 10,000 years ago and continues to grow today, being considered the youngest Romanian land. It is also the best preserved delta in Europe, being a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990 and considered a biosphere reserve, with an impressive labyrinth of lakes and canals that roam through the largest compact reed area in the world.

Surely Deltas biggest show is that given by birds, not less than 331 species. In addition to the more known and common birds that can be found here (different species of ducks and geese, hawks, egrets, swans, cormorants, gulls and other wetland birds), rare and less common species in other areas of Romania, such as piciorongul and others, alongside rarer goose species such as red-necked goose (50% of the worlds population), rare species of predators and cormorants (60% of the world’s population). The pelicans are certainly the most emblematic birds of the Delta: the common pelican, the curly pelican.

Delta has an amazing biodiversity, nearly 5,500 species, of which 1,839 plants. The vegetation of the Danube Delta is predominantly specific to wetlands, 78% being reed, sedge, rush, pepper, dwarf willow. It is worth mentioning that the Delta has the largest compact reed area in the world with an area of 1750 km². On the river banks, the most common species are trees and shrubs, white poplar, black poplar, sea buckthorn, blackberries, etc. On the edge of the canals we can meet a variety of white or yellow water lilies, which are spectacular during the flowering period between June and September. Also in the reserve area are two carnivorous plants, aldrovanda and pond poison.

A special place in the flora of the Delta occupies the Letea Forest, one of the oldest nature reserves in Romania and the northern subtropical forest in the world. The scenery here is a special one, where the forest clusters alternate with the sand dunes once formed on the seabed. Oaks predominate, some of them over 300 years old. More than 10 species of orchids can be found in the woods, but also a creeping species that can reach up to 25m.

At the Black Sea, the Danube is divided into three main arms: Chilia, Sulina and St. George, forming the Danube Delta.

Chilia arm

The first bifurcation is upstream of Tulcea, where the Chilia branch is heading north, with the largest length (120 km) and the flow of about 60% of the total amount. It starts from Chilia Citadel, the point where the Danube splits into two arms: Chilia and Tulcea.

Sulina arm

This arm is the shortest (only 64 km), being straight, regularized and channeled, used for navigation. As a result of the works that took place between 1862 and 1902, the length of the arm fell from 93 km to 64 km and the volume of spilled water doubled (18% at present), the minimum depth being 7 m, and the maximum of 18 m.

Sulina is a tranquil place with a beautiful beach, which can successfully replace the large seaside agglomeration. It is the most east point in Romania, but also in Continental Europe. The Danube Delta offers the most unique accommodation for tourists. Lovers of exciting sensations can spend a holiday in a floating hotel. Currently there are at least 18 floating hotels awaiting guests at Crişan, Uzlina, Nufărul, Roşu, Sulina or Tulcea. Also in Delta are the best fishing spots.

The Sfântu Gheorghe arm

The Sfântu Gheorghe arm is the largest (108 km), advancing to the southeast. To the south, there are two channels that connect with the Iancina basin. Sfântu Gheorghe is the oldest arm, carrying 24% of the volume of water and alluviums. Navigation on this Danube arm is of local interest.

The main points of interest in the Danube Delta: Murighiol, Murighiol Lake, the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Halmyris, the former harbor of St. Georges, the ruins of a paleocrestrial basilica with the crypt for the martyrs relics, the Halmyri Monastery, the natural reserve lakes. On the way to Murighiol do not miss: Danube Delta Ecomussion Center Tulcea – the largest aquarium in SE Europe where you will first know the flora and fauna of the delta, but also the traditions of the place; The Enisala Citadel, the Orthodox monasteries in northern Dobrogea, or the natural reserve of the Macin Mountains.

Murighiol is an attraction for those who spend their holidays in the Danube Delta. A few steps away from the village the Danube Delta waters are opened. In addition to the lush, landscaped sites of the waters, which are an irresistible attraction for nature lovers, Murighiol has the advantage of being accessible to tourists who do not have enough time to spend their vacation.
